Through Saturday, Rich’s Gun Shop will be marking its first year in business since relocating from Oregon in a big way. Almost everything in the store will be marked down, and there will be prizes and giveaways happening every day of the week.
Rich’s Gun Shop has all the accouterments that bring firearms enthusiasts to the shop to browse. But they’ve got something else that their competitors don’t have: a professional gunsmith with over 50 years of experience.
Lee Richeson was 15 years old when he began apprenticing with his dad, who founded Rich’s Gun Shop in Lake Grove, Oregon, in 1963.
“I learned everything from my dad before he died in 1987,” Richeson said. “Today, gunsmithing is a dying profession.”
Richeson said that he can work on any gun, and he keeps a stockpile of odds and ends that are hard to find. He picked them up from customers who wanted to get rid of them and at yard sales and gun shops that were closing for one reason or another. And many of these parts are out of production or obsolete.
If a customer brings in a rare gun, that part may be the difference between winning the business of a new customer and losing them to someone else. But in the case of not having what a customer needs, Richeson also can make parts. He has a Bridgeport mill and a lathe in his work area, with many custom tools and fixtures for specific firearms.
Luckily, Richeson said his son Chris, who focuses on the retail side of the business, wants to learn gunsmithing.
“I’ve always wanted to learn, and growing up in the family business has really given me the knowledge and eye for detail in mechanical and detail work,” Chris Richeson said. “But it takes time and focus. I’m doing everything I can to learn.”
At Rich’s Gun Shop, they strive for the highest level of quality to provide the quality of service they would expect done on their own firearms. Rich’s Gun Shop is located at 476 E. Riverside Drive, Suite 1B, and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
