The Dublin Gas Engine Meet is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with three days of vintage cars, tractors and gas and steam engines Sept. 9 to 11.

Since its inception, the annual meet has become New England’s largest gas engine show, and this year’s featured engine is flat-belt-driven machinery.

Bart Cushing, a member of the Dublin Gas Engine Meet and organizer of the event, said one of the reasons the meet has grown to such popularity is because many of the machines on display are still functional, and demonstrations of how they work can be provided.

“It’s quite active, and that’s part of our charter – education on how these things work,” Cushing said. “We have lots of working items.”

Cushing said the equipment has deep connections to New Hampshire industries, noting that New England was one of the areas in the United States that led the field in converting to mechanized agriculture.

Among the displays, there will be a working bone-grinder which was once used to make poultry feed, an operating sawmill, a shingle mill that cut wooden shingles prior to the popularization of asphalt and metal shingles, a planer and a lathe. On Saturday and Sunday, Steve Poole will be churning ice cream with an antique three-horse International gas engine, with ice cream available for purchase.

Throughout the weekend, a hobby-related flea market will be held on the grounds. On Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., there will be a narrated parade featuring antique vehicles and equipment, with information about each piece, where it was used and the work it did.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, there will be a pork-and-bean supper held at 6 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $15 for adults or $10 for children. All proceeds go to the Dublin Gas Engine Meet organization. Tickets for the supper can be reserved at dublinnhgasenginemeet.com.

Admission to the meet is $10, with children 12 years or younger free. The meet will run from 7 a.m. until dark on Friday and Saturday, and 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, and is a rain-or-shine event. The event is held at Cricket Hill Farm, located on 1716 Main St. (Route 101) in Dublin. Free parking is available at the site.
